Leiston to host its second Sizewell C careers event of 2025

Sizewell C is set to host its second Leiston-based careers event of 2025, offering local residents the opportunity to explore the wide range of job and training opportunities available right on their doorstep.

The event will take place on 29 October at the Sizewell Social Club on King Georges Avenue, and will feature representatives from Sizewell C and around 20 of its supply chain partners.

New £10m Natural Environment grant fund launched in East Suffolk

A new £10m grant scheme has been launched to support environmental enhancement projects along the East coast.

The Natural Environment Improvement Fund (NEIF) is designed to mitigate the landscape and visual impacts of Sizewell C, the new nuclear power station under construction near Leiston in Suffolk.

An awards panel has been established to oversee the fund, comprising representatives from East Suffolk Council, Suffolk County Council, Sizewell C, Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape, and Natural England.

Deep Atomic launches SMR for data centres

The MK60 small modular reactor design, developed specifically to provide power and cooling to data centres, has been unveiled by Deep Atomic.

The MK60 is a light water small modular reactor (SMR) incorporating multiple passive safety systems. Deep Atomic says it is "compact, scalable, and built on a foundation of proven technology". Each unit generates up to 60 MWe and provides an additional 60 MW of cooling capacity through its "integrated data centre-centric design approach".

HS2 opens twin Warwickshire cycle and road bridges

HS2 has opened two bridges near Leamington Spa carrying a key local road and a long-distance cycle track across the new high-speed railway.

The Fosse Way bridge carries the B4455 across the railway near the village of Offchurch outside Leamington. It follows the route of a roman road between Exeter and Lincoln and is now used by local traffic between the villages around Leamington and Coventry.

Dounreay sponsors inaugural apprentice awards

Dounreay is marking the 70th continuous year of its training programmes for young people by sponsoring the inaugural Highlands and Islands Apprentice Awards.

The event in Inverness on 27 November celebrates apprentices, employers, training providers and mentors across the region.

Thousands of young people have been trained in a wide variety of disciplines at Dounreay since the first intake of apprentices in 1955.

This year alone, site operator Nuclear Restoration Services created over 50 new opportunities for young people, including 20 new apprenticeship starts.

Three companies have won contracts with a total value of up to £2.9bn to supply key non-nuclear infrastructure works on the Sellafield site.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Costain Limited, and HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction Ltd will be part of a long-term arrangement called the Infrastructure Delivery Partnership (IDP).

The partnership will deliver projects and tasks to support essential services at Sellafield like electricity distribution, water, road and rail networks, bridges, foundations and security installations.

Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) has appointed Costain as the principal contractor to reduce the height of two reactor buildings at Trawsfynydd former nuclear site, located in Gwynedd, North Wales.  

Valued up to £70 million, this transformative project represents a major milestone in the region’s regeneration. At its peak, Costain is expected to employ more than 100 people to deliver the programme, creating opportunities to boost regional skills development and make a lasting contribution to the local economy.

Sizewell C Fuel Supply Contracts
Fuel supply contracts signed for Sizewell C

Sizewell C has signed a six-year uranium enrichment services supply contract with Urenco and a long-term fuel fabrication contract with Framatome for fuel for the planned Sizewell C nuclear power plant in the UK.

The supply contract with Urenco for enriched uranium services will support the first six years of the two-unit plant's operation, establishing a secure front-end fuel supply. The enrichment services will be provided at Urenco's enrichment site at Capenhurst, near Chester in the north-west of England.
